Visiting Budapest in Spring (March to May)

Spring Weather in Budapest

Spring in Budapest is a delight. After the chilly winter months, the city starts to come alive with blooming flowers, green parks, and a renewed vibrancy in the air. March can still have days with a crisp edge, with average temperatures ranging from 4°C to 12°C (39°F to 54°F), but by April and May, temperatures warm up nicely.

Expect average highs of 16°C to 22°C (61°F to 72°F) in April, and by May, highs can reach up to 24°C (75°F). Lows in the early spring hover around 5°C (41°F), but by late May, they rarely dip below 11°C (52°F).

Tourist Crowds

Spring is a shoulder season, which means you’ll enjoy a more relaxed experience with fewer tourists compared to the summer months. This is the perfect time to explore Budapest’s attractions without the long queues, and it’s easy to find a quiet spot in one of the city’s many cafés or on the banks of the Danube.

Visiting Budapest in Summer (June to August)

Summer Weather in Budapest

Summer in Budapest is warm and lively, with July and August experiencing the year’s peak temperatures. Expect average highs ranging from 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F) and lows that stay comfortably between 15°C and 19°C (59°F to 66°F). The city basks in sunshine during these months, with long days perfect for exploring.

Tourist Crowds

Summer is peak tourist season in Budapest, and for good reason. The city is buzzing with energy, and there’s always something happening. However, this also means larger crowds, especially at popular sites like Buda Castle, the Parliament, and the Széchenyi Thermal Bath. It’s a good idea to book accommodation and tickets to major attractions in advance.

Our own Budapest e-scooter tours and Budapest e-bike tours often sell out comfortably in advance, so be sure to book early to secure your preferred time and date!

Summer Activities in Budapest

Budapest truly shines in the summer. It’s the best time for outdoor festivals, including the world-famous Sziget Festival in August, which draws music lovers from all over the globe to Óbudai-Sziget (also known as Hajógyári Island), the largest of Budapest’s Danubian islands.

The Danube Promenade is lively, with open-air bars and restaurants offering stunning views of the river. Cool down with a dip in one of Budapest’s many outdoor pools, like Palatinus on Margaret Island, or take a scenic Danube cruise. Summer is also a great time to explore the city’s vibrant nightlife, with many bars and clubs hosting events on their rooftop terraces.

Visiting Budapest in Winter (December to February)

Winter Weather in Budapest

Winter in Budapest is cold, with temperatures often hovering around freezing. December and January are the chilliest months, with average highs of 1°C to 3°C (34°F to 37°F) and lows that can drop to -3°C (27°F) or lower. Snowfall is not uncommon, adding a magical touch to the city, particularly around Christmas.

Tourist Crowds

Winter sees fewer tourists, except during the festive season in December, when visitors flock to our city for its world-famous Christmas markets and holiday cheer. Outside of this period, you’ll find Budapest much quieter, making it a great time to explore without the crowds.

Winter Activities in Budapest

Winter in Budapest is all about embracing the cold and enjoying the festive atmosphere! The city’s Christmas markets are among the best in Europe, with the most famous being the one at Vörösmarty Square. Here, you can sip mulled wine, sample chimney cake, and shop for handmade crafts. Our blog about the best Christmas markets in Budapest explores this topic in more detail.

Another must-see is the ice skating rink in City Park, which is one of the largest outdoor rinks in Europe and offers a picturesque setting for some winter fun. And what better way to warm up than in one of Budapest’s historic thermal baths? The Széchenyi Bath is a favourite in winter, where you can soak in the hot thermal waters while surrounded by snow (possibly!).

E-Magine runs tours during winter, including a dedicated Budapest Christmas Market tour in December! We can provide warm gloves for everyone taking part and we add a few more stops along the way to help keep us all warm.
